Seminar: City Representations in Film: Space, place and experience in film.

The modern city and the cinema are closely interrelated, since the rise of the latter followed on the heels of industrialization and urbanization. The city and the urban landscapes are central to cinematic representation. The cinematic depictions of the cities are also an evidence of their history.

In the framework of the proposed seminar we examine some of the most important theoretical approaches used to analyze the cinematic representations of the city (Krakauer, Bruno, Robertson and others). Taking under consideration emblematic representations of the city in film we measure the influence of cinematic representation on the creation of narratives and discourses on the modern city and its sociopolitical history. The approach is interdisciplinary and intersectional.
